About Finch

Finch bundles a small native client with an opinionated set of open-source container components, so you can build and run containers without assembling them yourself. The core build, run, push and pull commands are handled by nerdctl, containerd manages containers, BuildKit builds OCI images, and everything runs inside a virtual machine managed by Lima.

Most common nerdctl commands work, and the nerdctl command reference serves as documentation. The project says Finch is a developer tool and is not meant for production environments.

Strengths

  • One installer sets up nerdctl, containerd, BuildKit and Lima
  • Familiar nerdctl-style commands
  • Builds standard OCI images

Limitations

  • Does not implement every upstream nerdctl command
  • Not intended for production or multi-tenant workloads
  • Runs containers inside a virtual machine

Alternatives to Finch

Compare all

Software that can replace Finch for an important use case, and what changes if you switch.

  • Docker Desktop

The standard way to run containers on a Windows or Mac desktop, free for personal use and paid for larger companies.

Docker Desktop bundles the engine, Compose, Kubernetes and a dashboard in one installer, but it is closed source and requires a paid subscription above a company size threshold.

  • Podman Desktop

A desktop app for containers and Kubernetes that does not need a paid licence at a certain company size.

Podman Desktop adds a graphical desktop app that installs Podman and works with Docker and Kubernetes clusters, with no licence fee at any company size.

  • Podman

Daemonless container engine with a Docker-compatible command line.

Podman is a daemonless engine with a near drop-in Docker command line and rootless containers, available on Linux as well as Windows and macOS.

  • Colima

Run container environments on macOS and Linux from the command line.

Colima runs container environments from the command line on macOS and Linux instead of Windows, supports multiple instances with port forwarding, and needs a Docker client for its Docker runtime.

  • OrbStack

Fast Docker and Linux virtual machine runtime for macOS.

    FreemiumProprietarymacOS

OrbStack is a macOS-only Docker and Linux VM runtime with a graphical app and full Linux machines, but it is closed source and commercial use requires a paid licence.

  • Apple container

Run Linux containers in lightweight virtual machines on a Mac.

Apple container runs OCI images in lightweight virtual machines optimized for Apple silicon, but it drops Windows support and needs a supported Apple silicon Mac and macOS release.

  • nerdctl

A command-line tool for containerd that works like the docker command, including Compose support.

nerdctl is the docker-style containerd command line that Finch bundles; used directly it targets Linux, with rootless mode and Compose support, and no managed virtual machine.

Finch as an alternative

Listings that name Finch as an alternative.

  • Docker Buildx

A Docker CLI plugin that extends image builds with BuildKit, including multi-platform builds.

Finch bundles BuildKit, nerdctl, containerd and Lima in one installer for macOS and Windows, using nerdctl-style commands instead of the Docker CLI.

  • Docker Engine

The container runtime that builds, packages and runs applications in Docker containers.

Finch bundles nerdctl, containerd, BuildKit and Lima for local development on macOS and Windows, and is not intended for production workloads.
