About Flent
Flent, the FLExible Network Tester, is written in Python and combines well-known benchmarking tools such as netperf and iperf into aggregate, repeatable test runs, including a set of tests for bufferbloat. Results can be explored in an interactive GUI and turned into publication quality graphs.
It captures metadata from local and remote hosts, collects secondary data such as CPU usage, WiFi, qdisc and TCP socket statistics, and supports batch runs to automate a testing regime. It suits researchers and network engineers.
Strengths
- Repeatable aggregate tests built on netperf and iperf
- Interactive GUI and extensive plotting
- Collects CPU, WiFi, qdisc and TCP socket statistics alongside results
- Batch mode for automated test runs
Limitations
- Needs netperf or iperf and a test server on the other end
- Aimed at technical users rather than a quick speed check

Alternatives to Flent
Compare allSoftware that can replace Flent for an important use case, and what changes if you switch.
iPerf3
Measures how fast a network link really is between two machines you control, which a speed test cannot.
iPerf3 is the BSD-licensed throughput tool Flent builds on, giving raw TCP, UDP and SCTP measurements with JSON output but no plotting or aggregate test suites.
nuttcp
Command-line tool for measuring TCP and UDP network throughput.
nuttcp is an open-source command-line throughput tester for TCP and UDP on Windows, macOS and Linux, without Flent's plotting or statistics collection.
NTttcp
A Microsoft command-line tool for benchmarking network throughput on Windows.
NTttcp is Microsoft's command-line throughput benchmark for Windows machines, with prebuilt binaries but no plotting or latency analysis.
Flent as an alternative

Waveform Bufferbloat Test
Browser test that measures internet speed and how latency rises under load.
Flent runs repeatable latency-under-load experiments with plots on Linux, but needs netperf or iperf and a test server at the other end.
Similar software
Related functionality, not necessarily a direct replacement.
LibreSpeed
Self-hostable speed test with no Flash, Java or Websocket.
OpenSpeedTest
HTML5 speed test that can be self-hosted from a Docker image.
oha
Measure web application performance with a terminal load generator.
gping
Ping with a live graph, so you can see latency spikes and packet loss instead of reading a column of numbers.
mtr
Combines traceroute and ping into one continuously updating report.
