About MagicaVoxel

MagicaVoxel is a voxel art editor by ephtracy with a built-in GPU path tracer, which is the unusual part: you build a model out of cubes and then render it with real lighting, soft shadows and depth of field, without exporting to anything else.

It is freeware from a single developer. The last release was in 2021 and the project has not been updated since, but it still runs and remains a standard tool for voxel art. The source is not published, and there is no Linux build.

Strengths

  • A GPU path tracer is built in, so renders look finished without a second program
  • Very quick to learn compared with general 3D software
  • Exports to common mesh and voxel formats for use elsewhere
  • Small download that runs on modest hardware

Limitations

  • No release since 2021 and no sign of further development
  • Closed source from a single developer
  • Windows and macOS only; no Linux build
  • Voxel art only, with no conventional polygon modelling

Alternatives to MagicaVoxel

Compare all

Software that can replace MagicaVoxel for an important use case, and what changes if you switch.

  • vengi

Voxel art suite with an editor, a format converter and a thumbnailer.

vengi is open source under MIT and runs on Linux too, and its converter reads MagicaVoxel files, though its editor is less polished and has no built-in path tracer.

  • Goxel

Create 3D artwork from colored voxel blocks.

Goxel is an open source GPL-3.0 voxel editor for Windows, macOS and Linux, with layers and several export formats, but it has no path-traced renderer.

  • VoxelShop

Voxel editor for building blocky models and exporting them for games and rendering.

VoxelShop is open source and exports Collada, OBJ, PLY and sprite sheets for games, but it is a Windows-focused Java build with quiet development.
