About Performance Co-Pilot

Performance Co-Pilot (PCP) collects performance metrics from one or many hosts and lets you analyse them live or from recorded archives. You can compare metrics between hosts and time periods and look for trends and unusual patterns.

It is packaged in Fedora, RHEL, Debian, SUSE, Ubuntu and Gentoo, and includes PCP versions of tools such as atop and htop. APIs and libraries let you export metrics from your own applications. It suits administrators and performance engineers.

Strengths

  • Collects metrics from multiple hosts and operating systems
  • Live and historical analysis from archives
  • Included in major Linux distributions
  • Extensible with APIs for custom application metrics

Limitations

  • Steeper learning curve than a single-machine monitor
  • Aimed at administrators rather than casual users

Alternatives to Performance Co-Pilot

Compare all

Software that can replace Performance Co-Pilot for an important use case, and what changes if you switch.

  • sysstat

Collection of Linux command-line performance tools including sar, iostat, mpstat and pidstat.

sysstat records historical activity with sar and related tools on a single Linux machine, with simpler text output and no multi-host collection.

  • Netdata

Per-second metrics for a machine with no configuration, and charts that appear the moment you install it.

Netdata gives per-second metrics with dashboards that work immediately, but long retention across many machines pushes toward its paid cloud.

  • Prometheus

Metrics database that scrapes targets and evaluates alerting rules.

Prometheus is a scraping metrics database with PromQL and alerting rules, needing exporters on each host and extra tools for long retention.

  • atop

A full-screen Linux performance monitor that reports and logs system and per-process resource usage.

atop logs system and per-process usage daily for long-term analysis on one Linux host, rather than across a fleet.

  • nmon

A terminal performance monitor for Linux and AIX showing CPU, memory, disks, network and processes.

nmon is a terminal monitor for Linux and AIX that records to CSV for later analysis, without multi-host collection or APIs for custom metrics.

  • Glances

A cross-platform system monitor that runs in a terminal, in a browser, or as an API feeding a dashboard.

Glances watches several servers through a web interface and APIs and exports to InfluxDB, but needs a Python installation.

  • below

A Linux resource monitor that records system, cgroup and process statistics and replays them later.

below is Apache-2.0 and records system, cgroup and process statistics for replay on Linux servers, one machine at a time.

  • Monitorix

Lightweight self-hosted tool that graphs Linux and BSD server resources and services in a browser.

Monitorix graphs Linux and BSD server resource history in a browser with a built-in web server, designed for single small servers rather than many systems.

Performance Co-Pilot as an alternative

  • dool

A Linux command-line tool that reports CPU, memory, network, disk and load statistics in real time.

Performance Co-Pilot collects and archives metrics across many hosts for live and historical analysis, with a steeper learning curve than a single script.
