About Piskel

Piskel is a sprite and pixel art editor that runs in the browser, with free offline desktop versions for Windows, macOS and Linux. You draw frame by frame and watch a live preview of the animation, with the frame delay adjustable as you work.

Finished work exports as animated GIFs for sharing or as spritesheet PNGs and ZIPs for game projects. A child-friendly edition, Piskel for Kids, offers a distraction-free version for younger users. It works best in a desktop browser in landscape orientation.

Strengths

  • Live animation preview with adjustable frame delay
  • Exports animated GIFs and spritesheets
  • Runs in the browser or as an offline desktop app
  • Child-friendly edition for kids and classrooms

Limitations

  • Poorly suited to phones and portrait screens
  • Focused on pixel art rather than general image editing
