About Aseprite

Aseprite is a paid editor built for pixel art and sprite animation. It handles layers, frames and cels, frame tags for keeping several animations in one file, and playback in forward, reverse and ping-pong modes with onion skin for reference.

Painting features include palette control with alpha, a shading ink, pixel-perfect strokes, RotSprite rotation for small sprites, tiled mode and custom brushes. It exports animated GIFs, PNG sequences and sprite sheets with JSON data, and can be scripted into an asset pipeline. A trial version is available.

Strengths

  • Frame tags, onion skin and multiple playback modes for animation
  • Sprite sheet export with JSON data for game engines

Compare all

Software that can replace Aseprite for an important use case, and what changes if you switch.

  • LibreSprite

A pixel art and sprite animation editor, forked from the last version of Aseprite that was still GPL.

LibreSprite is a free GPL-2.0 fork of the last open Aseprite version, adding Android builds, but development is slow and it lacks years of upstream improvements.

  • Pixelorama

A pixel art editor for sprites, tiles and animation, built in Godot and running on desktop, Android and the web.

Pixelorama is free under the MIT license, adds Android and browser versions and tilemap tools for game art, though its documentation is still incomplete.

  • PixiEditor

Create pixel art, illustrations and animations in one editor.

PixiEditor is free and open source under LGPL-3.0, combining raster and vector tools on one canvas, though some animation features are still on its roadmap.
