About Pop Shell

Pop Shell is a layer for GNOME Shell built by System76 for Pop!_OS. Its core feature is advanced tiling window management, arranging windows automatically and letting you navigate and manage them from the keyboard.

It is developed alongside Pop!_OS but works as an extension on other GNOME desktops. The repository includes light, dark and high contrast styles and a Debian packaging directory, and its main branch targets the Ubuntu 24.04 (Noble) base.

Strengths

  • Automatic tiling inside a regular GNOME session
  • Keyboard-driven window navigation
  • Backed by System76 and shipped with Pop!_OS

Limitations

  • Works only with GNOME Shell
  • Development follows the GNOME version used by Pop!_OS

Alternatives to Pop Shell

Compare all

Software that can replace Pop Shell for an important use case, and what changes if you switch.

  • Forge

A GNOME Shell extension that adds i3 and sway style tiling window management to the desktop.

Forge also adds tiling inside a regular GNOME session, using i3 and sway style behaviour, though it is looking for a new maintainer.

  • PaperWM

A GNOME Shell extension that tiles windows side by side on a horizontally scrolling strip.

PaperWM keeps you in GNOME Shell but arranges windows on a horizontally scrolling strip, with a settings pane for keybindings and per-app rules.

  • Tiling Shell

A GNOME Shell extension that adds FancyZones-style tiling layouts and Windows 11 style snap assistance.

Tiling Shell stays in GNOME but uses FancyZones-style custom layouts and a Windows 11 style snap assistant instead of automatic tiling.

  • Tiling Assistant

A GNOME Shell extension that adds Windows-style snap assist and expands GNOME's tiling layouts.

Tiling Assistant, maintained under the Ubuntu organisation, adds Windows-style snap assist and extra layouts to GNOME rather than keyboard-driven automatic tiling.

  • COSMIC

Use System76's desktop environment with configurable workspaces and window tiling.

COSMIC is System76's full desktop environment with tiling and floating workflows built in, replacing GNOME rather than extending it.
