About Portainer

Portainer puts a browser interface in front of Docker, Docker Swarm and Kubernetes, so containers, images, volumes, networks and stacks can be created and inspected without the command line. The Community Edition is free and open source; a Business Edition adds role-based access control, registry management and support.

Strengths

  • One console for Docker, Swarm and Kubernetes across several hosts
  • Deploys Compose stacks and Helm charts from the browser

Limitations

  • Role-based access control and several fleet features are Business Edition only
  • The agent needs access to the Docker socket, which is effectively root on the host

  • Dozzle

A self-hosted web app for watching Docker, Swarm and Kubernetes container logs and stats live.

  • Headlamp

A Kubernetes user interface that runs as a desktop app or inside a cluster as a web app.

Portainer is a web console that covers Docker and Swarm as well as Kubernetes and deploys Helm charts, but role-based access control is in the paid Business Edition.
