ruby-build downloads, compiles and installs a Ruby version named by a definition into a directory you choose. It ships definitions for CRuby and other Ruby implementations, can list available versions, and forwards extra configure arguments to the build.
Compile output goes to a log file unless verbose mode is on. It knows only the versions bundled with it, so you upgrade ruby-build to get new Ruby releases. It is often used together with rbenv.
Strengths
- Installs any listed Ruby version into a chosen prefix
- Supports CRuby and other implementations
- Pairs with rbenv for version switching
Limitations
- Must be upgraded to learn about new Ruby releases
- Compiles from source, which takes time
