ruby-install is a shell-based installer for Ruby interpreters. It fetches the latest version numbers and checksums from the ruby-versions project, then downloads and builds the chosen Ruby, JRuby, TruffleRuby (native or GraalVM) or mruby release.
By default it installs into /opt/rubies/ when run as root and ~/.rubies/ for regular users. It can also install into any directory and download from arbitrary URLs. It suits developers who want several Ruby versions side by side, often alongside a version switcher.
Strengths
- Installs several Ruby implementations, not only MRI
- Verifies downloads against checksums from ruby-versions
- Per-user or system-wide install locations by default
- Can install into arbitrary directories and from arbitrary URLs
Limitations
- Only installs Rubies; switching between them needs a separate tool
- Builds from source, which takes time
