About Stellarium
Stellarium renders a realistic sky in three dimensions: stars, planets, the Moon, constellations, deep sky objects and atmospheric effects, from any location and at any date and time. Set it to your back garden at eleven tonight and it shows what you will actually see.
That makes it both a teaching tool and a genuinely practical planning tool: it simulates the view through binoculars or a named telescope and eyepiece, and can control a real telescope mount through a plugin. Star catalogues extend to hundreds of millions of objects if you download them.
