About vkd3d-proton

vkd3d-proton is a fork of VKD3D that serves as the development branch for Proton's Direct3D 12 support. It translates Direct3D 12 calls from Windows games into Vulkan, so those games can run under Wine and Proton on Linux.

Steam users get it automatically through Proton. It can also be built and installed into a Wine prefix by hand, which suits people who manage their own Wine setups or want to test newer builds.

Strengths

  • Core of Direct3D 12 support in Proton
  • Actively developed, with thousands of commits
  • Can be installed into custom Wine prefixes

Limitations

  • Needs a Vulkan-capable GPU and driver
  • Manual installation outside Proton is aimed at technical users
