About 389 Directory Server

389 Directory Server is an LDAP server for storing identities, groups and organisation data, and it can also act as a structured NoSQL store. It supports multi-supplier replication for horizontal scaling, handles thousands of operations per second and hundreds of thousands of accounts, and includes fail-over and backup features.

It is the upstream of Red Hat Directory Server, is free to download, and the project says a new install can be set up in under an hour. Releases continue on several maintained branches.
