About clipmenu

clipmenu is a minimal clipboard manager for Linux X11 sessions. A background daemon, clipmenud, records clipboard contents, and running clipmenu opens a picker in dmenu, rofi or a similar menu so you can put an earlier item back on the clipboard.

A systemd user service is included. It fits tiling window manager setups where users already rely on dmenu or rofi and want clipboard history without a graphical tray application.

Strengths

  • Works with dmenu, rofi and similar launchers
  • Very small and scriptable
  • Ships a systemd user service

Limitations

  • X11 only, not Wayland
  • Requires a separate menu program such as dmenu or rofi

  • clipcat

A clipboard manager for Linux written in Rust, with a daemon, command-line control and menu front ends.

clipcat is a Rust daemon with CLI and menu front ends that can be bound to shortcuts, but requires configuration.

  • cliphist

A command-line clipboard history manager for Wayland that works with dmenu, rofi, wofi and similar pickers.

cliphist keeps the dmenu, rofi or wofi picker workflow and supports images, but runs only on Wayland rather than X11.

  • Ringboard

A fast, memory-efficient and composable clipboard history manager for Linux on X11 and Wayland.

Ringboard adds Wayland support alongside X11 with CLI, terminal and graphical front ends, and focuses on low memory use.

  • clipse

A configurable clipboard manager for Unix systems that shows your clipboard history in a terminal interface.

clipse swaps the external menu for a configurable terminal interface for clipboard history on Unix systems.

  • CopyQ

A clipboard manager that keeps everything you copied in searchable tabs, with scripting on top.

CopyQ is a standalone graphical manager with tabs and scripting on Linux, Windows and macOS, needing no separate menu program.

  • Clipman

A clipboard history plugin for the Xfce panel that keeps text and images after apps close.

Clipman keeps text and images in the Xfce panel with regex-triggered actions, but it is designed for the Xfce desktop rather than tiling window managers.

  • GPaste

A clipboard management system for GNOME with a background daemon, GTK 4 interface and command line.

GPaste combines a daemon, CLI and GTK 4 window with GNOME Shell integration, but it is built for GNOME and less useful elsewhere.
