About GameMode

GameMode is a daemon and library combination for Linux from Feral Interactive. Games, or a launcher wrapping them, request a set of optimisations that are applied to the host system and the game process only while the game runs, then reverted afterwards.

It was designed as a stop-gap for problems with Intel and AMD CPU power management that could hold back game performance. It suits Linux players who want performance tweaks without leaving them switched on all the time.

Strengths

  • Optimisations apply only while a game runs
  • Games can request it directly through the library
  • Backed by a known game porting studio

Limitations

  • Linux only
  • No graphical interface
  • Benefit depends on hardware and game
