About Gamescope

Gamescope is the compositing window manager behind the SteamOS session, formerly known as steamcompmgr. It takes frames from games and presents them with fewer copies and less latency than a traditional desktop compositor.

On a regular Linux desktop it can run a game in a nested window, where it offers features such as resolution scaling, upscaling filters and frame limiting. It suits Linux gamers who want Steam Deck-style control over how a game is displayed.

Strengths

  • Same compositor used by SteamOS and the Steam Deck
  • Upscaling, resolution scaling and frame limiting per game
  • Low-latency frame presentation

Limitations

  • Linux only
  • Configured with command-line options rather than a settings window
  • Behaviour can vary with GPU drivers
