About Immich

Immich runs on your own server and backs up photos and videos from its Android and iOS apps automatically. It offers a timeline, albums, sharing, map view, face recognition and machine-learning search, with your originals stored on hardware you control.

It is free and open source (AGPL-3.0) and installed with Docker. The project sells an optional supporter license that does not unlock features. You are responsible for storage, backups and keeping the server up to date, and the project still labels itself as under active development.

Strengths

  • Automatic background backup from Android and iOS with selective album backup, album sync and Free Up Space to remove backed-up files from the phone
  • Search by metadata, objects, faces and CLIP; facial recognition and clustering; reverse geocoding and a global map

Limitations

  • Server needs Docker with at least 6 GB RAM and 2 CPU cores (8 GB and 4 cores recommended); non-Linux hosts are strongly discouraged
  • The Postgres database must not sit on NTFS, exFAT or a network share and should use local SSD
  • Built-in database backups cover only metadata; media in UPLOAD_LOCATION must be backed up separately
  • Since v3 the amd64 machine-learning container requires the x86-64-v2 microarchitecture level

FreeFree to use with every feature; the project states nothing will be put behind a paywall. An optional lifetime supporter purchase is sold at buy.immich.app: Single $25 (for a single user) and Family/Server $100 (for the whole server), each granting only 'Supporter status'. The docs also list a FUTO F-Droid repository (get.immich.app/fdroid) and GitHub APK releases besides the store listings.
