spotifyd streams music from Spotify like the official client, but runs as a background daemon that uses fewer resources and supports more platforms. It implements the Spotify Connect protocol, so the machine appears as a playback device you control from the Spotify app on a phone or computer.
It suits a Raspberry Pi, home server or desktop connected to speakers where you want Spotify playback without running the full official app.
