About Mopidy

Mopidy is a music server written in Python that runs in a terminal or in the background on Linux or macOS machines with audio output. Out of the box it plays local files and Internet radio, and extensions add sources such as Spotify and SoundCloud.

It runs as an HTTP server, and with the Mopidy-MPD extension it also acts as an MPD server, so anyone on the network can manage a shared playlist from a phone, tablet or computer using MPD or web clients such as Mopidy-Iris. The Raspberry Pi is a common host.

Strengths

  • Extensions add many music sources and frontends
  • Works with existing MPD and web clients
  • Shared playlist control from any device on the network
  • Runs well on a Raspberry Pi

Limitations

  • No Windows support mentioned
  • Streaming service support depends on third-party extensions
