About Firefly III

Firefly III tracks income and expenses across accounts, with budgets, categories, tags, bills and recurring transactions. Rules apply automatically to incoming transactions, and the reporting is unusually thorough for a free tool: balance over time, expense breakdowns, budget performance and net worth.

Data comes in through file import or through companion importers that talk to bank aggregation services. The project is explicit about what it is not: no AI, no cloud, and it lives in the European Union under the AGPL.

Strengths

  • Budgets, categories, tags, bills and recurring transactions in one place
  • Rules that categorise transactions as they arrive
  • Detailed reports including net worth and budget performance over time
  • Self-hosted under the AGPL, with no cloud component at all

Limitations

  • A PHP application with a database that you have to run and update
  • Bank imports need a separate companion tool
  • The interface is dense and there is a lot to learn
  • No official mobile app; third-party ones use the API
