About PrusaSlicer

PrusaSlicer generates printing instructions for FDM machines and mSLA resin printers from one program. Settings range from whole-print parameters down to per-layer adjustments, and models can be painted, cut and arranged on the bed before slicing. Multiple projects with multiple beds can be open at once.

Prusa develops it for its own printers, but profiles for machines from many other manufacturers are included. On Linux it is distributed exclusively through Flathub; Windows and macOS builds come from the project page or GitHub releases.

Strengths

  • Handles both filament and resin printers in one program
  • Per-layer setting changes and painted supports and seams
  • Profiles for printers well beyond Prusa's own range
  • No account needed, and the project says so plainly

Limitations

  • Linux builds come only through Flathub
  • Tuned first for Prusa hardware; other machines need profile work
  • The interface exposes fewer calibration tools than OrcaSlicer

Alternatives to PrusaSlicer

Compare all

Software that can replace PrusaSlicer for an important use case, and what changes if you switch.

  • SuperSlicer

A PrusaSlicer fork with extra fine-tuning settings, generated calibration tests and better thin-wall handling.

SuperSlicer is a PrusaSlicer fork adding generated calibration prints, finer top-surface settings and better thin-wall handling, but it is single-maintainer, with its last stable release tagged in 2024.

  • OrcaSlicer

A slicer built around calibration, with temperature towers and flow tests you run from inside the program.

OrcaSlicer adds built-in calibration tests for temperature, flow, retraction and pressure advance plus scarf seams, though releases occasionally regress a printer profile.

  • UltiMaker Cura

The most widely used free slicer for filament 3D printers, with profiles for hundreds of machines.

UltiMaker Cura is LGPL-3.0 licensed, with profiles for hundreds of printers and a plugin marketplace, but it is heavier and slower to start.

  • Bambu Studio

Bambu Lab's slicer, built on PrusaSlicer, with project-based workflows, multi-material painting and remote printer monitoring.

Bambu Studio is a fork of PrusaSlicer that adds multi-material painting, STEP import and remote monitoring, but it is built around Bambu Lab hardware and accounts.

  • Simplify3D

Prepare and preview print jobs with a commercial 3D slicer.

Simplify3D is a closed-source commercial slicer requiring a paid license and an appropriate printer profile, replacing PrusaSlicer's free AGPL-3.0 licensing.

  • ideaMaker

Prepare 3D models for printing with Raise3D's slicer.

ideaMaker is Raise3D's free but closed-source slicer, and its printer profiles and advanced features depend on supported hardware.

  • KISSlicer

Fast, compact slicer that converts STL models into G-code for filament printers.

KISSlicer is a fast, simple closed-source slicer for filament printers only, and its free version is limited to a single extruder.

  • IceSL

Slicer with built-in modelling that turns STL files into printer-ready G-code.

IceSL is free but closed source, adds a scriptable modeller for procedural geometry, and has thinner documentation and printer profiles.

PrusaSlicer as an alternative

Listings that name PrusaSlicer as an alternative.

  • ChiTuBox Basic

Resin 3D printing slicer that prepares models for SLA, DLP and LCD machines.

PrusaSlicer is free and open source under AGPL-3.0, runs on Linux, and slices both resin and filament printers in one program without needing an account.

  • Kiri:Moto

Generate 3D-printing and CNC toolpaths in a browser.

PrusaSlicer is a desktop application under AGPL-3.0 that slices filament and resin printers, but it does not generate CNC toolpaths.

  • Lychee Slicer

A resin-focused slicer with a free tier, strong automatic supports and a large printer profile library.

PrusaSlicer is free and open source under AGPL-3.0, slices both resin and filament printers, and needs no account, which Lychee expects.

  • mslicer

Slice 3D models for resin printers.

PrusaSlicer is also open source, under AGPL-3.0, and slices resin and filament printers in one program, with painted supports and no account needed.
